A Quick Weekend Visit To Chattanooga’s Southside
Growing up in Georgia, traveling up to Chattanooga, Tennessee was a magical getaway spot where my grandparents liked to take me, my brother, and my sister to stay in the train cars of the Chattanooga Choo Choo. We journeyed through the aquarium (which, while smaller than the Georgia Aquarium, I still argue is better), hiked Ruby Falls, saw Rock City, and explored the quaint downtown of this beautiful mountain city. While many, many moons have passed since these beloved weekend trips with my Nana and Papa, I still enjoy a quick jaunt up to Chattanooga. My itinerary these days does read a little differently, though. I try to keep my footprint smaller and my itinerary less packed.
For years, Chattanooga has been one of those Southern cities that people quietly rave about. It’s close enough for a quick road trip from Atlanta, Charlotte, Birmingham, and Nashville, small enough to feel manageable, and packed with just enough great food, shopping, and scenery to keep a weekend full without feeling rushed. While there’s plenty to do throughout the city, one of the most exciting areas right now is around the Chattanooga Choo Choo.
The historic train station has seen major renovations in recent years, breathing new life into the Southside neighborhood. What was once a nostalgic stop is now surrounded by trendy restaurants, coffee shops, boutique hotels, music venues, and some of the city’s best local businesses. If you’re planning a quick getaway, here’s how I’d spend 48 hours in Chattanooga.
Day One
Start with Breakfast at Niedlov’s Cafe & Bakery
If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that a good weekend trip starts with a great breakfast. Niedlov’s Cafe & Bakery is one of those places that immediately makes you wish you had something like it back home. Known for its fresh breads, pastries, and excellent coffee, Niedlov’s has become a staple in Chattanooga.
The bakery case alone is worth the stop, but if you’re staying for breakfast, the biscuit sandwich, avocado toast, and rotating pastries are all delicious. Be sure to order a cruffin (their cross between a muffin and a croissant), though. It’s a non-negotiable as you’re setting yourself up for a great day of eating. The restaurant is casual, cozy, and friendly. You’ll order at the counter and then find a nook to settle into to eat. Get there early because the line can get long and they will sell out of different things (like this very important cruffin which I will stress again that you don’t want to miss).
Spend the Morning Exploring the Chattanooga Choo Choo
After breakfast, make your way over to the Chattanooga Choo Choo district. The renovated property still holds onto its historic charm, but it now feels far more vibrant than ever before. The gardens, courtyards, and restored train cars make it worth wandering around even if you’re not staying there.
One of the best parts of this area is how walkable it is. Within a few blocks, you’ll find local shops, cocktail bars, coffee spots, and plenty of outdoor spaces to relax. The Southside has become one of Chattanooga’s most exciting neighborhoods, and the Choo Choo sits right in the center of it. Take a few hours to wander around the gardens and meander through the shops. Chattanooga is the kind of city that doesn’t rush you, so stop and smell the roses.
Lunch at Bleu Fox Cheese Shop
If you’re anything like me, you’ll always make time for a good cheese shop. Bleu Fox Cheese Shop is a small but impressive spot filled with artisan cheeses, charcuterie, wine, sandwiches, and specialty foods. They also have some fabulous sandwiches you can order at the counter. I personally loved their Figgy Brie sandwich, which has a lovely sweet and salty mix.
This is the kind of place where you can build the perfect picnic board, grab something to snack on back at your hotel, or pick up a few gifts to take home. The staff is incredibly knowledgeable, and even if you don’t know the difference between a manchego and a brie, they’ll point you in the right direction.
An afternoon stroll through Warehouse Row
Warehouse Row is one of those places that feels uniquely Chattanooga. The historic warehouses have been converted into a beautiful shopping district filled with local boutiques, national brands, restaurants, and coffee shops.
Just down the road from Bleu Fox and the Chattanooga Choo Choo, you can leave the car parked and just walk over to stroll through the halls of Warehouse Row. Even if you’re not looking to do a lot of shopping, it’s worth walking through just to take in the architecture and atmosphere. It feels upscale without being stuffy, and it’s a nice way to spend an afternoon before dinner.
Back to the Choo Choo for dinner at Elsie’s Daughter at Hotel Chalet
Elsie’s Daughter feels like a natural extension of the beautifully restored Hotel Chalet (the hotel at the Choo Choo) and the history of the Chattanooga Choo Choo. The restaurant takes its name from Elsie, the wife of railroad magnate John T. Thomas, giving a subtle nod to the area’s railroad roots. Inside, the space feels warm and elegant with rich wood tones, soft lighting, and a setting that feels transportive without being overdone. The menu is intentionally limited, focusing on a smaller selection of well-executed dishes rather than pages of options. That approach makes the experience feel thoughtful and refined.
Live Music at Nic & Norman’s
There’s something about ending a day outside with live music playing that just feels right. Nic & Norman’s, founded by Greg Nicotero and Norman Reedus, has become one of Chattanooga’s most popular spots. Any fans of The Walking Dead will enjoy seeing their pictures and nods to the show throughout the restaurant. Don’t worry, though, the musicians, bartenders, and general crowd are far from dead. It’s typically a lively crew at this scene.
If you’re looking for a quieter scene to end the night, across the street in the Kinley Hotel, there’s a speakeasy tucked away called Company. But shhh, don’t let this secret spread too far. Hidden behind a secret door, this small room is comfortably appointed, and the bartenders are attentive.
Day Two
Grab breakfast at Honey Seed
Honey Seed is one of those places that makes you want to linger a little longer over breakfast. Bright, welcoming, and full of natural light, it has become a favorite in Chattanooga for both locals and visitors. The menu offers a little bit of everything, from avocado toast and breakfast bowls to biscuits, pancakes, and hearty brunch plates. There’s also a good coffee menu and fresh juices, making it an easy place to settle in before starting the day. If the weather is nice, the patio is especially worth grabbing a seat.
A mid-morning ice cream from Clumpies
You can’t leave Chattanooga without stopping at Clumpies. While technically known for ice cream, Clumpies feels like more than just a dessert stop. It’s one of those institutions that even the locals make a point to stop in regularly.
Their flavors rotate, but you can usually count on creative seasonal options alongside classics like salted caramel, mint chocolate chip, and cookies and cream. Whether you stop by in the morning for coffee and something sweet or save it for later in the day, Clumpies is worth the trip.
Explore More of the Southside
One of the best things about Chattanooga is that it doesn’t demand a packed itinerary. The Southside is easy to explore at your own pace, and there are enough restaurants, breweries, and local shops to keep you busy for hours.
Take some time to walk through the neighborhood, browse a few stores, and enjoy the slower pace. Chattanooga is one of those cities that feels best when you leave room for a little wandering.
One Last Meal Before Heading Home
Before getting back on the road, grab one more meal or coffee in the Southside area. Chattanooga has a way of making you want to stay one more night, and chances are, by the end of the weekend, you’ll already be planning your next visit.
