Wes Moss: The Retire Sooner Method, a USA TODAY Bestseller

What does it take to build a retirement that is not only financially secure, but genuinely happy?

Wes Moss: The Retire Sooner Method

Wes Moss has spent nearly three decades helping people prepare for retirement. His latest book, The Retire Sooner Method, debuted in the Top 20 on the USA TODAY bestseller list.

In this episode of Retire Southern, James Lewis sits down with his longtime friend, colleague and occasional bandmate to explore the research behind the book and the unexpected journey that made Wes one of the country’s most recognized voices on retirement.

That journey began in rural Pennsylvania, where Wes rode along with his father, a large-animal veterinarian, on visits to Amish farms. It continued through the University of North Carolina, his first book and a determined campaign to get behind a radio microphone.

Today, Wes hosts Money Matters, America’s longest-running live call-in investment and personal finance radio show. He is also the host of Retire Sooner and a regular contributor to Ask an Advisor on the Clark Howard Podcast.

But this conversation is not primarily about Wes’s résumé.

It is about what he discovered after studying America’s happiest and unhappiest retirees.

Working with a national research firm, Wes and his team surveyed 1,200 people across the country to identify the financial and lifestyle habits most closely associated with retirement happiness. The results became the foundation of The Retire Sooner Method.

Some findings were expected. Others surprised him.

Simply being retired, or being in a financial position to retire, produced a significant increase in reported happiness. Happy retirees devoted substantially more time to the activities they loved. They maintained stronger relationships, deliberately imagined their future and gave themselves permission to get enough sleep.

The research also revealed something more unsettling: America is experiencing what Wes calls a “friendship recession.” As people age, children move away, careers end and social circles naturally erode. Building and maintaining community must therefore become an intentional pursuit.

The conversation moves between the financial and emotional sides of retirement. Wes explains why fear of running out of money can persist even among wealthy families, why constantly changing investment strategies creates problems and why the ultimate objective is not simply accumulating more.

It is creating a life filled with purpose, connection and enduring happiness.

Because the real goal is not simply to retire sooner.

It is to start living sooner.

The conversation explores:

  • How Wes went from rural Pennsylvania and Amish farm country to Chapel Hill and Atlanta

  • How his first book helped him find the confidence to pursue broadcasting

  • The evolution of his relationship with Clark Howard

  • Why Wes decided to completely rebuild his retirement research after 15 years

  • What his national study of 1,200 Americans revealed about retirement happiness

  • Why reaching retirement can increase reported happiness

  • The financial “green zones” associated with happier retirees

  • Why happy retirees have at least five core pursuits

  • How those retirees spend approximately 280 more hours each year doing what they love

  • Why community matters more than the activity itself

  • What Wes means when he says America is in a “friendship recession”

  • How a Happy Retiree Life Map can turn intentions into action

  • Why getting enough sleep emerged as a retirement superpower

  • The importance of choosing a financial strategy you understand and following it consistently

  • What Wes ultimately hopes his work brings into other people’s lives
